From its humble beginnings more than 30 years ago, the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing has evolved into one of the most coveted achievements in surfing. Last year, Gabriel Medina made history has the first Brazilian to be crowned champion. With the 2016 Vans Triple Crown in full swing, all eyes will be on the historic Banzai Pipeline as we move into the home stretch of this event.
As 2016 was seemingly the #YearOfJohnJohn, John John Florence is looking to end the best year of his career in style. With an impressive win at Haleiwa, he is chomping at the bit for his third Triple Crown. As we hit the waves at Ehukai Beach Park on December 8th, Kelly Slater, who has been more successful at Pipeline than any other surfer in history, will be looking to add another gold star to his already cemented legacy. He will be looking to hold off John John and Medina from adding the ever-elusive Billabong Pipe Masters crown from their impressive resumes.
While it’s tempting to look the favorites, every surfer should be on your radar at Pipeline, as the event has been inconsistent, crowning a new champ every year since 2009. Whoever will come away with the Pipeline and/or the Triple Crown, one thing’s for certain: the 2016 Vans Triple Crown will be one for the books.
