I am super stoked to be doing this blog for The Surf Channel. It’s been an amazing year competing this year and this time in December is my opportunity to spend time with family and do some fun things.
One of the things that I have been really wanting to do was pay tribute to my late grandmother, Yiya. I was extremely close to her and unfortunately she passed alway this time last year.
She is originally is from Greece so I thought it would be sweet to be able to do something unique in her honor, so I want to try and land an air trick in Greece and dedicate it to her. I’ve never been to Greece, so I asked Red Bull to help me make this idea come to life and here we are.
My family and I (our 17 bags) headed to the airport to meet up with ESM photographer Nate Adams and then it took us 18+ hours to get here. It was awesome that my aunt and uncle came to meet us at the airport! From the airport, we drove straight to a local surf spot to meet up with Red Bull Greece athlete Nikolas Plytas. It was crazy to think there was a fun place to surf only 20 minutes from the airport on our way to Athens!
I surfed at Lagonisi which translates to rabbit island. The waves were about 2-3 foot with a rocky bottom. It was great to wipe off the jet lag with a fun session. I am so stoked to be here because it’s an amazing opportunity to spend time with my family and meet my extended family and cousins I’ve never met before! I really enjoy spending time with family and if you can surf and have family time, why not?! Ha It’s not going to be easy to find waves in Greece but I am determined to make something cool for Yiya.
Today the waves were flat so we headed four hours south of Athens to Lagouvardos. It was still flat when we got here but tomorrow the waves are supposed to be fun! I can’t wait!
On the search to find the right conditions to land an air…. until later.
