Because our sport is mainly dictated by the decisions of mother nature, it is not unusual for surfers to find various ways to keep themselves enjoying the freedom of the ocean.
Being able to enjoy your surroundings at a more manageable pace also has the added benefit of producing experiences which last much longer, allowing individuals to fully drink in and appreciate whatever spectacle greets them.
Such a spectacle was captured recently by a New Zealand man who encountered a friendly and curious Orca Whale during a SUP outing. The inquisitive whale surfaced a tenth of a meter from the boarder, nudging his board and even lightly biting it. The creator of the video, Luke Reilly, is a New Zealand native who has had previous encounters with orcas, but never one so physically close.
Channel 3 New Zealand news interviewed him about his experiences, and he described the encounter as nerve inducing, although he never believed himself to be in real danger.
This video is a simple and effective example depicting the reason so many of us love the ocean and nature in its unblemished state. To be approached by such an iconic predator of the sea is an experience that undoubtedly leaves an impression, and to be able to share such an experience is a blessing we all take far too much for granted.
