Oney hails from a coastal village in rural Sumbawa where his local beach is home to some of Indonesia’s best surf breaks. Encouraged and mentored by a team of international superstars, Oney picks up a surfboard at the age of seven.
In 2007, Rip Curl offers Oney the opportunity to move to Australia and train, whilst attending an elite sports school. Once on the Gold Coast, things really start to roll for Oney as he balances education with his endless desire to make history.
Chasing The Dream Producer, Karen Elisabeth Donald, hails from the UK. She travelled to Bali eight years ago in order to learn to surf. This four year project became Karen’s passion after meeting Director Jason Moon and witnessing life on the edge of a jungle, in Oneys home village.
Karen knew the sight of grommets surfing ‘massive waves’ was well worth documenting. As a photo-journalist from London and Jason Moon, a film maker from New Zealand, first met while surfing in Bali during 2010. Their intention was to re-visit the art of surf-film-making and felt inspired by mentor, Dick Hoole (a successful film-maker from the mid 1970’s).
The project instantly gained momentum when Karen and Jason met Oney, then age 16, at his home in Lakey Peak, Sumbawa.
