Australian wildcard Nathan Hedge is no stranger to Teahupo’o. In fact, the “Hog” has made it through to the finals before at the Billabong Pro Tahiti in 2004, during his previous years on the WCT circuit. The North Narrabeen local took runner-up position last week at the Air Tahiti Nui Billabong Pro Trials earning the spot for the big event.
However, Day 1 of competition in Tahiti was not for the faint of heart. 10-15 ft wave faces would have terrified most surfers, especially considering the shallow reef, but Hedgy wasn’t thinking about pulling back. He was there to charge, and that he did, dropping in super late into one of the best barrel rides of his professional career.
