With water temperatures in the mid 40’s, below freezing air temps, and 25 mph winds keeping most sane people running from the ocean during the winter months, local die-hard New Jersey surfers have been charging the lineup, drooling over the offshore barrels hitting the coastline. Surf photographer Matthew Lang documented some of the best swells to hit Jersey Shore so far this season and this is what he had to say about the athletes braving the conditions:
“Waves all over NJ and the East Coast made it easy for anyone willing to get out there and brave 43 degree water, with air temps in the 20’s, and 20 mph offshore winds to get tubed all day. These are harsh to most, but NJ surfers like Sam Hammer, Mike Gleason, Clay Pollioni, Al Pollioni, Zack Humphreys, Rob Kelly, Chris Kelly, Brian Robinson, Brendan Tighe and Tommy Ihnken brave this weather for the reward – heavy barrels all day with your buddies. Looking forward to another amazing winter here on teh Jersey Shore.”
Below are the best shots from two sessions so far this winter in head high plus surf with a SSE swell. Just when you thought Jersey Shore was all guidos and parties, she pumps out something like this!
