Northern Sumatra holds some of the best surfing in the world. Only catch is that it’s not easy to get there. Some of the best waves are only accessible by boat.
For the past 20 years, surf charters have been operating out of Indonesia. They specialize in taking surfers to remote breaks and because of their mobility, can follow the changing swell. Not all surf charters are equal, some faster, some more lush. In northern Sumatra, LOCAL STYLE found the Jiwa surf charter, a sweet, traditional Indonesian sailing vessel similar to a pirate ship.
