Bali’s very own Mega Semadhi took home the victory at this year’s Rip Curl Cup after scoring an excellent barrel at Padang Padang. This final ride rocketed him from third to first place, making up for last year’s Invitational where the title was taken by American Chris Ward in the final seconds.
As a Bali native from Pecatu, Semadhi was ecstatic with the outcome, saying “This win means so much to me, here at my home and in front of my family, and because of last year too. When that last set came in I said not this one, not this one, I gotta pick the right one. And then it was like this fairy tale come true when I heard the score and that I won.”
The Rip Curl Cup is well-known for running only in the best conditions with waves such as Padang Padang that require patience from the surfers. With plenty of barrels throughout the competition, day 42 of the 45-day waiting period proved it could deliver some serious waves. Mega Semadhi will now have the honor of having his name inscribed on the coveted Rip Curl Cup alongside previous champions.
