As the newest ambassador for the SurfAid Schools Program, current ASP World Tour Champion Joel Parkinson (AUS) swapped his surfboard for books when he visited Sydney’s Barrenjoey High School. After the 2004 tsunami devastated Sumatra, Indonesia, Joel Parkinson was touched by SurfAid’s work. Parko felt like things were different with this tsunami because of the visuals the public was able to experience.
“It was overwhelming to see what an impact they had on that region at that time,” Joel Parkinson said about SurfAid. Seeing the impact that surfers had on Sumatra with the assistance of SurfAid, Parko became motivated to help contribute and make an impact personally.
