For centuries, big colorful kites have graced the skies of Indonesia for sport, pleasure and as one of the country’s most popular activities. Even in the most rural areas, Indonesians are wired like everyone else in the world with smart phones and Facebook. Despite the 24/7 use of technology, they cherish the simple art of flying kites, and kite flying competitions are routinely found throughout the country. On a windy day when the surf was blown out, LOCAL STYLE‘s Mike Rodger stumbled on to a locals’ competition in the hills above Padang in Western Sumatra, Indonesia.
