The young aerial master Gabriel Medina (BRA) decided to spend some time away from the crowd on Saturday evening for a freesurf at Off the Wall. Though there were about twenty surfers at Pipeline and ten or so at Backdoor, Medina sat far down the beach at Off the Wall and had his own fun pulling into closeout barrels, breaking boards and throwing massive airs. With the Billabong Pipe Masters only a few weeks away, Medina will need to spend most of his time locked in at Pipe, but let’s just say for now he’s getting his feet on the wax and enjoying the warm water of Oahu’s North Shore.
The Surf Channel photographer, Hale Metzger, is capturing all the North Shore action as the winter season fires off. Check out an exclusive collection of freesurf images straight from Hawaii:
If you heard the new about Gabriel Medina’s insane backflip at Off The Wall, bet you’ve been searching for some documentation to prove it. Luckily, Travis Kuhlman was on the scene and got the shot:

The aerial specialist has been practicing his lethal bag of tricks in the smaller surf at Off The Wall. He threw down a backflip the other day during training… Can he pull it off in competition?
