Directed by Chris Nelius and Justin McMillan, Storm Surfers 3D tracks the voyage of a determined team of surfers that are bravely living the search. These legendary athletes charge insane mountains of water looking for the perfect rides, situations in which most people would rather choose death.
Australia, Tasmania, New Zealand, Japan, South Africa and Hawaii breathe massive surf that attempt to quench the thirst of these athletes. The Storm Surfers live their lives tracking weather systems across the world, with the desire to pioneer these undiscovered breaks.
Lucky for us, the Storm Surfers took the time to capture an entire season of their search for viewers like us with the first 3D footage. Storm Surfers 3D is an incredibly unique experience that allows the audience to share the emotions, thrill and excitement of the legendary surfers risking their lives for the biggest ride of their lives.
“It’s not just an anonymous person or a name that comes up as a super on the screen and you go, ‘Wow, isn’t that incredible?!’ and then move on to the next thing. In Storm Surfers 3D, you really get to know Ross and Tom and how special they are, and their fantastic lust for life, so when you see them riding a death defying wave or you see one of them come close to death, then you’re right in there, emotionally invested with them as it happens,” said Chris Nelius.
The directors of the film describe the filming process as they attempt to capture each breathtaking second in extremely dangerous environments, in special behind-the-scenes footage coming up on The Surf Channel Television Network.
Justin McMillan explains a little about the entire process of getting the Storm Surfers 3D footage: “I guess the scary thing, the nature of our shooting, is that we never know when anything is going to happen so we’ve got to have many different angles, all rolling to record the action at one time. And if something breaks down on one camera, then hopefully another camera has caught it – that’s just the nature of Storm Surfers and the nature of the ocean.
“There is no ‘Action’, there is no ‘Cut’ and there is no ‘Take two’. It’s just ‘Please be really, really ready camera men,’ because if we do miss it, then there is no reason why we came all this way and there’s no reason why that guy just risked his life if we’re not ready to cover it.”
The pressure is on.
We couldn’t imagine what it took to get the shots in 3D, but we are sure stoked to be enjoying them soon on national television in the USA! Check out Storm Surfers 3D on The Surf Channel YouTube, and be sure to check out the screenings coming to your town after as it tours Australian theaters.
