A shocker of a heat took place on Day 3 of the Hurley Pro at Trestles, as local boy Patrick Gudauskas (USA) took out the defending Lowers Champion, Kelly Slater (USA). The beach roared with applause as the San Clemente native took to the air and ripped apart the waves on offer scoring a 15.57 heat total over Slater’s 14.80, just enough to move on to the next round. While Slater thought the scoring was a bit off (according to an interview with Tracks Magazine), he did tell Gudauskas that he was stoked for him and hopes he wins the event.
The huge upset takes Slater out of the No. 1 spot in the world, a sore loss for the Hurley Pro at Trestles defending champion who has always made it past Round 3 – and tends to win about 50% of the competitions at Lowers. Here are a few snap shots of how it all went down.
