Kanaha Beach, Maui was closed down for the second time this week as beach goers witnessed a shark viciously attack a sea turtle around 3:30pm on October 22nd, 2012. Last week, a shark attacked a paddle boarder closing Kanaha Beach the first time. There were no fatalities, but precautionary measures closed about a mile of the beach from Kite Beach to the Kahului Airport runway. Kanaha Beach has since been reopened, but after numerous shark sightings in this area and multiple attacks, beach goers are on high alert.
In a press release, county officials stated that the shark is about 10 to 12 feet long, based off of its fin size. People watched as the shark chased and then bit the sea turtle. Luckily, the turtle is expected to be okay although it did receive lacerations to its fin. It was taken to the Department of Land and Natural Resources, where it was treated for injuries.
