First responders and medics were called to the shoreline when a surfer was reported unresponsive out in the water. According to Maui Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro, firefighters and first responders administered lifesaving efforts on the 50-year-old Maui resident.
He was brought to the hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.
Not 24 hours later, firefighters were dispatched to the north side of Honokohau Bay where a young female hiker fell into the water.
The woman managed to swim to deeper waters to avoid the large waves from crashing into the rocky shoreline and depleting her energy.
