WHEN: Thursday, July 5 from 9am-12pm
WHERE: Ocean Beach Pier, Crystal Pier at Pacific Beach, Fiesta Island, and Oceanside Pier
WHAT: Surfrider Foundation San Diego, in partnership with I Love a Clean San Diego & San Diego Coastkeeper, is hosting four separate beach cleanups on the morning of July 5, 2018 to tackle the gigantic mess left behind by the July 4th holiday. We invite the public to help us clean our beaches, and prevent plastic litter from entering our ocean. We aim to show citizens that by switching from single-use items to reusable ones, they can minimize the amount of litter that ends up on our streets, our waterways, our beaches, and ultimately our ocean.
Surfrider representatives and volunteers will be onsite at Ocean Beach Pier and Oceanside Pier
I Love A Clean San Diego representatives and volunteers will be onsite at Fiesta Island
SD Coastkeeper representatives and volunteers will be onsite at Crystal Pier at Pacific Beach
Each location will offer excellent photo-ops of 100’s of local citizens doing their part to keep our beaches clean
Final tallies and weights of trash collected, along w/ the most interesting items found, make for a great feature
Entercom radio staff will be participating at Ocean Beach pier, while Reef staff will be participating at the Oceanside Pier cleanup. Reef is the founding sponsor of Surfrider’s Better Beach Alliance, a collaboration to expand 3 key areas of impact, including # of beach cleanups, trash removal and volunteers.
WHY: At the 2017 Morning After Mess, 400+ volunteers removed over 1,643 lbs of trash from four beaches in only 3 hours. Without these events, a sizeable portion of that trash – most of which is plastic, a non-biodegradable material that is toxic to wildlife and often finds its way into our food chain – could have ended up in the ocean. While our cleanups make a tremendous impact, our true aim is to prevent trash from reaching the beach in the first place. Through successful programs like Rise Above Plastics, Hold Onto Your Butts & Ocean Friendly Restaurants, our organization uses outreach, education and advocacy to eliminate single-use plastics and cigarette butts BEFORE they reach the coast. The Surfrider Foundation’s mission is to protect and enjoy the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through a powerful activist network.
