On January 30th, 2018 the CEO of the surf brand Quiksilver was presumed lost at sea. At 7:30 a.m. Pierre Agnes took his boat out fishing to a popular surfing beach just north of Biarritz called Hossegor.
According to the Port Master at the port of Capbreton, Agnes radioed in that his arrival time would be delayed due to poor visibility. Pierre Agnes’ motorboat – Mascaret III washed up on the shore of La Graviere at 9:15 a.m. Immediately after this unfortunate discovery, the French coastguard launched a full fledged search party for the CEO which included three helicopters, two boats, and numerous lifeguards swimming a couple miles off shore.
10 hours into the search and Pierre Agnes was still no where to be found. Local surf photographers and others crowded along the coast of La Graviere, keeping an eye out for Agnes in-between sets. With little to no luck, there was no sign of Pierre Agnes.
Agnes is a well-accomplished fisherman and surfer. He has made similar trips “thousands” of times in tricky conditions.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Agnes friends and family during this terrible tragedy.
