SOUP BOWL, Bathsheba/ Barbados (Friday, November 10, 2017) – Round One of the World Surf League (WSL) Live Like Zander Junior Pro In Memory of Zander Venezia has been called ON. An increase in swell is showing this morning as two-to-four foot waves are beginning to fill in at Soup Bowl. Event organizers have planned a big day of competition as Thomo QS1,000 In Memory of Bill Thomson will run following Round Two Heat 4 of the juniors.
“We saw a lot of great surfing yesterday as the swell slowly started filling in during the afternoon and we’ve woken up to even more waves today so we’re on,” Robbins said. “We’ve got a full load of action today as we’ll run the juniors Round One and first four heats of Round Two, time permitting, before moving into Round Three of the QS. It’ll be great to get the men into their Quarterfinal match ups as they finish their competition tomorrow. It should be another exciting day of competition and good luck to all our competitors.”
World Junior Championship qualification is on the line and all those vying for spots are up right away.
Critical bouts start right away as current North America Junior Tour No. 3, and Barbados native, Che Allan (BRB) must try to hold down his spot there with a result and starts against an in-form Tommy McKeown (USA) and Nicolas Chalonec (MTQ) to kick off Round One Heat 1.
The race continues in Round One Heat 5 as current No. 4 Luke Gordon (USA) faces Blake Spier (USA), Laird Myers (USA) and Barbados’ own Ocean Gittens (BRB).
Ryland Rubens (USA) is the only one safe from falling out of the Top 4 and could clinch his first Regional Title, but has to deal with Sean Foerster (CAN), Chase Modelski (USA), and Rafe Gooding (BRB) in Round One Heat 7.
While Tyler Gunter (USA) is on the outside looking at the Top 4 picture, sitting at No. 5, he has a 40-point advantage on Gordon. Gunter will battle the talents of Rey Hernandez (MEX) and Logan Kamen (USA) in Round One Heat 9.
John Mel (USA) has a chance to lock down the No. 2 spot and begins in Round One Heat 15 against Alan Cleland (MEX), along with Barbados natives Andrew Rose (BRB) and Warren Povy (BRB).
Ending Round One in Heat 16, current No. 6 Tommy Coleman (USA) begins his hopeful run toward the Top 4 against Kyle Tester (USA), Caleb Crozier (USA), and Darian Pitcher (USA).
