SAN CLEMENTE, California/USA (Saturday, September 9, 2017) – Competition has been called OFF for the next two days at the Hurley Pro and Swatch Pro at Trestles, Stops No. 8 and 7 of the Men’s and Women’s World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), with fading and inconsistent surf on offer.
“It is Saturday morning down here at Trestles and the waves are tiny,” said Travis Logie, WSL Deputy Commissioner. “The conditions look great, but there is no swell, so we are going to be off for today and tomorrow. It looks like there is a great swell building in for Monday morning, so we’ll check back on Monday morning and see how we go.”
Event officials will reconvene on Monday, September 11 at 7:30 a.m. PST to reassess the conditions and make the next call.
Jeep Rankings Leader Jordy Smith (ZAF) is back to defend his Hurley Pro at Trestles victory and begins his campaign against 2017 rookie Ian Gouveia (BRA) and event wildcard Evan Geiselman (USA) in Round 1 Heat 6.
Fresh off of his Billabong Tahiti Pro win, Julian Wilson (AUS) is pitted against a hefty Brazilian duo of Caio Ibelli (BRA) and Jadson Andre (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 2.
Round 1 Heat 5 features reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) against aerialist Italo Ferreira (BRA) and wildcard threat Hiroto Ohhara (JPN). Florence will look for a strong start at Lowers to help hold his ground at the No. 2 ranking.
An all-Brazilian affair will kick off the Hurley Pro at Trestles as 2015 WSL Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) will battle Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) and Miguel Pupo (BRA) in Round 1 Heat 1.
The last heat of Round 1 will witness three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) face off against fellow power surfers Michel Bourez (PYF) and Ezekiel Lau (HAW).
When the Swatch Pro at Trestles resumes, it will be the first elimination Round 2 and an all-Hawaii affair as three-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore (HAW) will battle against Malia Manuel (HAW).
2016 WSL Champion, defending event winner, and current No. 1 Tyler Wright (AUS) will be against wildcard threat Macy Callaghan (AUS) in Round 2 Heat 3.
Six-time WSL Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) must overcome elimination against fellow Aussie Bronte Macaulay (AUS) if she’s to earn a second Trestles win and best last year’s runner-up finish.
Surfline, official forecaster for the Hurley Pro at Trestles, are calling for:
A small, new SSW swell will pulse in through the weekend as the NW swell mix fades. Next week looks better as back-to-back S swells move in Monday afternoon through Thursday, with Wed PM-Thur likely enjoying the largest waves of the waiting period. Friday the 15th will see an easing trend in surf, with smaller leftovers currently expected for the last couple days of the waiting period.
