COOLANGATTA, Queensland/AUS (Monday, July 10, 2017) – Invited athletes and surf fans from around the globe gathered at Padang Padang beach on Sunday for the opening ceremony of the Rip Curl Cup 2017. They came from far and wide to bless the event with good waves, a safe competition, and officially christen the start of the holding period to the one of a kind tube riding invitational.
It was a standing room only crowd gathered at Padang Padang to watch the presentation and meet and greet with several of the 16 invited surfers, including defending champion Mega Semadhi (IND).
The opening ceremony marks the first day of the one-month event waiting period, and means that all 16 invited surfers –eight Indonesians and eight international surfers –are now on-call to be at Padang Padang within 24 hours notice if and when event directors decide to give the green light to run.The opening ceremony was capped off with the traditional Balinese Kecak Dance performance, to ask the Balinese Gods for permission to hold the contest at this sacred spot and for a massive Padang Padang swell to arrive during the waiting period.
A series of Indian Ocean swells are forecast to reach Bali in the coming weeks and contest directors are monitoring them closely. According to Surfline, the official surf forecast partner of the Rip Curl Cup, the first significant swell will reach Bali on July 15-16, and a possible better swell is currently on the charts for July 20-22.
Contest directors are monitoring these swells closely should they develop into potential contest swells to run the Rip Curl Cup. Stay tuned to ripcurl.asia for the latest event status.
With no five-star swell for Padang Padang before the Opening Ceremony, wave conditions were not good enough to hold the Rip Curl Cup Trials. Instead, Rip Curl has announced that the local wildcard spot in the main event will be granted to Rio Waida, Indonesia’s highest-ranking junior surfer.
Waida has been on a tear in 2017, winning the first stop of the REnextop Asian Surfing Tour at Canggu and taking second place at the recent WSL Komune Bali Pro at Keramas. At just 17 years old, he is currently ranked second among all pro surfers in Asia. Now Waida will look to replicate his success on the biggest stage of his young career, the Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang.
“Part of the tradition of the Rip Curl Cup is to provide Indonesia’s top surfers with an opportunity to compete against the world’s best at the best wave in their backyard,” Rip Curl Southeast Asia Marketing Manager James Hendy said. “At Rip Curl, we always strive to support the next generation of surfing talent. Based on his performances this year, we felt that Rio has earned the opportunity to surf at Padang Padang against the best tube riders in the world.”
Waida joins a stellar Rip Curl Cup lineup that includes 3X World Champion Tom Curren (USA), North Shore kingpin Mason Ho (Hawaii), and top international young gun Jack Robinson (Australia). Among the 16 Indonesian surfers invited are defending champion Mega Semadhi, 2X Indonesian Champion Lee Wilson, and legendary Balinese surfer Rizal Tandjung.

About The Rip Curl Cup
The Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is Indonesia’s longest-running and most prestigious surfing competition, and the only World Surf League Invitational contest featuring the world’s greatest tube riders alongside Indonesia’s best.
The 2017 Rip Curl Cup features one of the most exclusive fields in professional surfing: just 16 invited surfers – eight of Indonesia’s finest and eight of the world’s elite. The official invite list will be announced to the world on June 26th. The select number of surfer invitations ensures this will be a “one-day, one-swell” event, increasing the likelihood of spectacular conditions and incredible performances. When official forecast partner Surfline alerts contest directors of an ideal Padang swell lining up in the Indian Ocean, the green light will be given and competitors will have 24-hours to make it to Bali’s Bukit Peninsula.
The waiting period for the 2017 Rip Curl Cup spans an entire month, from July 10 to August 10, the peak of Indonesia’s prime swell season, providing the event with the highest chance of scoring the spitting green barrels the Balinese Pipeline is world-famous for.
With an exciting lineup of invitees including Tom Curren (USA), Mason Ho (HAW), Bruce Irons (HAW), Clay Marzo (HAW) and Jack Robinson (AUS) lining up to take on defending champion and local kingpin Mega Semadhi (IND) and the rest of the Indonesian contingent, surf fans will be excited to get online and view all the action when Padang Padang turns on.
The 2017 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang will be webcast live to the world at ripcurl.asia. Fans can also visit the site to check real-time contest status and video updates from Bali.
