WSL PRESS RELEASE
TAVARUA/NAMOTU, Fiji (Wednesday, June 7, 2017) – The Outerknown Fiji Pro, Stop No. 5 on the 2017 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), will see a second-consecutive lay day today due to unfavorable conditions on offer at Cloudbreak and Restaurants. Event officials continue to closely monitor a long period swell forecast to arrive at the end of the week.
“As expected, conditions are not ideal to run the competition today,” said Renato Hickel, WSL Deputy Commissioner. “We do not have enough swell on offer, so we are calling the event off for the day. There is a long period swell forecast to come in at the end of this week, which could provide some great waves for the competitors. We will come back tomorrow for the call at 7:00 a.m. local time.”
Event officials will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7:00 a.m. local time to reassess the conditions and make the next call.
When competition gets back underway, elimination Round 3 will continue with big match-ups.
Round 3 Heat 8 will see 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater (USA) match-up against rookie Connor O’Leary (AUS). Slater will battle to continue his hunt for an historic fifth event title.
After his first CT win of the season, all eyes will be on 2017 CT Rookie Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) as he takes on reigning WSL Champion John John Florence (HAW) in Heat 6 of Round 3. Fioravanti has the opportunity to send Florence home with a second consecutive 13th place finish when they go head-to-head.
2015 WSL Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) will work to claim the Jeep Leader Jersey for the first time this season with a strong finish in Fiji, but will first need to eliminate Stuart Kennedy (AUS) in his Round 3 heat.
Up first will be three-time WSL Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) against Michel Bourez (PYF) in Round 3 Heat 5 when the event is called back on.
