Almost 65 years ago Jack O’Neill established one of the most well known companies of all time, O’Neill Wetsuits. Jack was one of the first to pioneer the world’s first neoprene prototype. From there the rest is history, literally.
There was always something about Jack that moved the surf industry. It could have been his passion and forward-thinking mindset of innovative technology in the industry or simply his love for the water. “I remember going to sleep at night. You see that wave, that wall of water, and that tube. It’s something with being close to nature like that, pretty hard to beat,” O’Neill said.
Jack was known for his notorious legendary moss green house overlooking the ocean along East Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz. Many of the other local surfers affectionately refer to the surf spot where perfect waves roll up to O’Neill’s steps as “Jack’s.” The indispensable pioneer of the surf industry passed away peacefully in his home. Surfer’s and the surf industry commemorate on his passing in the video above. The world is saddened by his passing but will remember him forever. Rest in peace Jack O’Neill.
