Mid afternoon, May 5th 2017, 18-year-old Sophia Raab was surfing along the shore of PCH and Sunset Blvd when she fell off her board abruptly and into the water.
Once she surfaced and climbed back onto her board, she described her leg being in excruciating pain, which urged her to look down at her leg where she immediately noticed a chunk of her thigh missing.
“I was standing up looking down at my leg and it was peeled open. I could see the inside of my leg,” she told KTLA. “It was the goriest sight I’ve seen in my entire life. I have no idea how it happened,” she added.
Raab suffered a severe laceration, which was described as 10 inches by 10 inches and 4 inches deep. The orthopedic surgeon claimed that the bite was consistent with that of a shark bite along with there being a good chance that a small shark feeding along the shallow coastline of Sunset Beach, CA had mistaken Raab’s identity.
Captain lifeguards confirmed that there had been no previous shark activity in the area, but they would keep a close eye out and are consulting shark experts about the incident.
Everyone wishes Sophia Raab good vibes and a speedy recovery!
