Oakley Surf Shop Challenge Lands in New Jersey 4/11

CARLSBAD, Calif., April 10, 2017 – The 2017 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge Northeast regional qualifier has been called on for Tuesday, April 11th at 16h Street in Belmar, New Jersey. New Jersey-area shop teams will compete for the chance to represent their region against six other regional qualifiers from Southern California, North Carolina, Florida, Northern California, and Hawaii at the National Championships this fall. The Mid-Atlantic regional qualifier, which was scheduled to run during a window of April 10-12, has been postponed until August due to a forecast for poor, un-contestable conditions.

Teams for the Northeast event will meet on the beach at 9 am with a possible 9:30 am start time depending on how the predicted small conditions shape up overnight. The unique event series, which has been running since the 1980s, pits four-man surf shop teams (two sponsored surfers and two shop employees) against each other. The winning team from each of the seven regional qualifiers will win an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the National Championship for a cash prize package and title of America’s Most Core Surf Shop.

Last year saw Heritage Surf & Sport Margate swoop in for the win with two-time Northeast Champion 7th Street Surf Shop absent. But 7th Street is back along with a few new shops, so this year should be interesting. The following teams are confirmed to compete:

• 7th Street Surf Shop
• Brave New World
• Bunger Sayville
• Farias Surf Sport
• Heritage Surf & Sport (Margate)
• Heritage Surf & Sport (Ocean City)
• Heritage Surf & Sport (Sea Isle City)
• Inlet Outlet Surf Shop
• Kona Surf Shop
• Wild Ocean Surf Shop

The 2017 Oakley Surf Shop Challenge schedule:

• April 6 – Southeast – Paradise Beach Park, Melbourne, Fla. – SUNRISE
• April 11 – Northeast – Belmar, NJ

About Surf Shop Challenge
Originally conceived to provide a fun and competitive format for the hardcore surf shop riders, the SURFER Shop Team Challenge was one of the most popular and exciting Southern California contests of the early 1980s. Through the years the contest has evolved, with seven qualifying regional events around the country, culminating in a national championship in Bali, Indonesia for the first time in 2012. The underlying principles, however, have remained the same. The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge is still about giving back to the shops, the true backbone of the industry and the heart of the sport of surfing. Each year the competition level rises, the stakes become greater and the prizes become bigger.
