WSL PRESS RELEASE
For the third consecutive year, Martinique Surf Pro is on the 2017 World Surf League Qualifying Series (QS) calendar, that is to say the highly-qualified global qualifying circuit. After two successful and suspenseful editions, some of the best surfers in the world will compete on the beautiful waves of Basse-Pointe, northeast of Martinique. They will try to succeed the Portuguese Frederico Morais, the 2016 winner.
The 2017 edition will be held from April 1 to 8 and will bring together more than 140 surfers, of about twenty different nationalities. The long and powerful right-hand break (wave that breaks from left to right when surfing) of Basse-Pointe is particularly appreciated by surfers, and images of the competition have been shown all around the world. Many athletes who were present in previous editions are coming back. Others, who have heard of the spot and the event, are eagerly waiting to compete against each other.
The range of sportsmen offered by the 2017 Martinique Surf Pro promises to be even more popular with a few stars, QS residents, and some of the most talented youngsters. Very nice surfing is about to happen then, especially as at this time of year, the tradewinds from the East are generally less strong and therefore no longer disturb the waves that become perfectly glassy.
Organized in partnership with the World Surf League (the international professional surf league), the Martinique Surf Pro competition is the only Caribbean Qualifying Series (QS) in 2017, as last year. As the QS 3,000 Event, the Martinique Surf Pro is an intermediate competition. It represents the third step of the qualifying pro- cess, after QS 10, 000 and QS 6,000, and before QS 1,500 and QS 1,000. The winner of this competition in Martinique will win 3,000 points, which re- presents a nice bonus to take a real leap forward in the QS. By registering his name in the 2016 Martinique Surf Pro, the Portuguese Frederico Morais had progressed by 147 places in the qualifying circuit which enabled him to qualify for the Championship Tour (CT), the Top 34 of the best world!
A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR A MAJOR EVENT
The Martinique Surf Pro is organized by Martinique Surfing. Created in 2009, the association aims to develop the discipline in Martinique and to attract surf-loving practitioners to the island. Besides this international com- petition, Martinique Surfing offers an extensive calendar of sporting events including federal competitions. The structure has also created « Surf Social » on the island, allowing people (of all ages but especially young people) to benefit from the upsides and privileges of this sport. Around 400 young people benefit from this activity each year.
A COMPETITION WATCHED ALL OVER THE WORLD
As a global event, the Martinique Surf Pro gets international media coverage, including media, press, TV, radio, social networks and the web. Again this year, amateurs and fans of surfing and sports in general will be able to follow the competition through live streaming, throughout the world. In 2016, the Martinique Surf Pro registered more than 1.5 million views on You- Tube, and more than 930,000 views on the World Surf League website!
