The 2017 Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast of Australia started heating up this morning, completing 5 full rounds of heats. It wasn’t until the 5th heat that the competition was rudely interrupted by some dangerous guests.
During this time of year, it is quite common to spot large groupings of bluebottle jellyfish off the coast. Surfing, being a sport centered in a natural environment foreign to humans, it is our responsibility to take necessary precautions but to sustain the ecological environment and understand we are just visitors in their territory.
During round 5 of the Roxy Pro, it became incredibly apparent that the swarm of bluebottles were bothering the CT surfers. Round 5 of the women’s heat included 2x champion Carissa Moore (HAW), Coco Ho (HAW), and Laura Evener(AUS), all top athletes on tour. As the heat concludes, all of the women were examining the parts of their body that were touched or stung by these jellyfish. Right then and there, the judges called off the event for the day. No athletes were seriously harmed, and the competition will resume within the week.
