Brief bio on Eric Sandoval:
Born in Hollywood, CA in 1968, I was one of 3 siblings and have been in Southern California all my life. My Mom was an avid beach girl, in her young life, she bodysurfed Newport/Hermosa beaches. So, as a family, we were always at the beach… didn’t know any different.
My brother and I were really into skateboarding and surfing around 13-14 years old, we lived in Thousand Oaks the majority of our youth. He still skates pools and ramps, and I still surf good size waves, it’s crazy! My mom used to drop me off on the summer bus, headed to Malibu. This is where I really learned the sport. Other surfers were actually friendly and encouraging over the years. I surfed at Malibu for 10 years straight and got to surf/know many of local people there, it was cool. I now surf at a relatively private surf spot, north of Malibu, been surfing there for 20 years (photo attached) I’m kind of “legendary” there, ha!
How/why you started?
The beginnings of Chubbysurf started back in/around 1995, with a MSN homepage that was free on the personal computer. The homepage was about me and I had a couple surfboards on there. I sold a few and thought, “wow” there is some potential in selling boards online (back then, there wasn’t much competition). So I added more surfboards, but, officially built a real Chubbysurf.com website, back in 1999.
I got a lot people surfing, and also sold damaged surfboards as decor. I couldn’t believe the demand! This is also when I had a keen interest in collecting vintage surfboards. At the time, I worked at Play It Again Sports as a manger (a new/used sports store), in Agoura. A lot of these old surfboards would walk right in the store (it was like destiny). Their were a few collectors that would come in and encourage me to join their club called “The Longboard Collectors Club”, it was a group of 20 or so surf collectors from up and down the coast. They’d get together to surf and sell vintage sticks! Now, the same group is around 1000 plus members. So in all of this, I was able to now sell used, decorative and vintage surfboards on the website, and make enough to be my own boss…
What does Chubbysurf do specifically?
Simply put, we have provided new, used, vintage, and decorative surfboards, to our clients, since 1999. These are people who buy for their companies or people who simply want decorative surfboard(s) for their home. The largest order to date is 550 used surfboards, and I was able to get them those in 3 months!
I’ve worked with many branded businesses, lots of hotel/resorts, restaurants, theme parks fashion, etc. On my own, I have handled the website, sales and marketing, phone calls, emails, surfboard acquisitions, photos, social media, packaging and shipping. I’ve had the honor and privilege of working with so many companies like “Dear John” , “Marmaduke”, Fast & Furious 7, & the Discovery Channel’s “Shark Week”, “Yard Crashers” , “The Bachelor”, Austin City Limits Festival, Planet Hollywood, Corona, Bacardi, E & J Gallo Wines, Leblon, Ford, Ralph Lauren, UGG, Aeropostale Times Square, American Eagle, Zinke, Refinery29, Dillards.com, Margaritaville Restaurants, The Long Beach Aquarium, Blue Coast Burrito Restaurants, “White Water” Waterpark, Morey’s Pier’s Waterpark NJ, The Postcard Inn FL, Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas, InnisFree Hotels , this is only a handful.
