Upsets dominated the 2016 Billabong Pipe Masters. When Michel Bourez, 30, squared off against John John Florence in the quarters, many were expecting the now Triple Crown winner to breeze through into the semis. But Bourez kept his cool and took advantage of some good waves, edging John John out.
Continuing the trend, Kanoa Igarashi upset both Kelly Slater and Jordy Smith on his road to the finals. But in a clutch performance in which he scored over an 8.5 on four of his last six rides, it was Bourez who went home with the win. He joins an elite company of surfers to have won each of the Triple Crown events in his career. However, a victory tour may not be in the cards for Bourez, as he is looking to unwind after the recent birth of his son. Much deserved.
