WSL Press Release
Location: Banzai Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii
Event window: December 8 – 20, 2016
Today’s call: Competition called OFF for the day
Conditions: 3 – 4 foot (1 metre)
BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu/Hawaii (Thursday, December 8, 2016) – The Billabong Pipe Masters in Memory of Andy Irons, the final stop on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT), has been called OFF for the day due to small and inconsistent conditions on offer.
“We have got some swell left over and we were really confident about today after seeing the swell build through yesterday,” said WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow. “It was a slow build yesterday and we had hoped it would hang around today, but unfortunately it dropped away a lot overnight. It is super inconsistent out there with not enough opportunity for four guys in the Pipe Invitational. We will be off for the day and come back tomorrow.”
Event organizers will reconvene at 7.30 a.m. (local time) tomorrow to assess conditions and make the next call.
When competition gets underway, the Pipeline Invitational will see a 32-man field battle for the two coveted wildcard entries into the Billabong Pipe Masters, including last year’s winner winner Jack Robinson (AUS) and runner-up Jamie O’Brien (HAW). Hawaiian chargers Ezekiel Lau (HAW) and Mason Ho (HAW) are also in the mix to earn the opportunity to compete against the world’s best surfers in the main event.
Surfline, official forecaster for the WSL, are calling for:
We expect to see a decreasing trend all day, with the better sets in the head high’ish range by sundown. Look for a further decrease in size from Friday through Sunday morning, although we should also see a bit of shorter period NNW to NNE swell mixing in. Overall we expect small surf during that time.
The next NW swell will build in and peak on Monday, although we should see a very modest building trend Sunday afternoon/evening. While the storm that created this swell was strong, it also wasn’t aimed especially well at Hawaii and also had part of its fetch cut off by the Kuril Islands. As such we expect to see a smaller swell with surf running in the waist-head high range on Monday.
The Billabong Pipe Masters will be webcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com as well as the WSL app.
The event is also being carried by the WSL’s LIVE broadcast partners Fox Sports Australia, CBS Sports in the United States, ESPN Brasil, Globosat, Edgesport, Sky NZ, Sport TV, Canal + Deportes, Channel Nine, MCS, Starhub, and Oceanic Time Warner Cable 250 & 1250 in Hawaii.
