Predicted Winner for 2016 Vans Triple Crown
The start of the Hawaiian Pro last weekend has got fans eager to see some elite surfing. We are looking forward to watching some pros. Will the new-comers take home the crown or will a repeating pro have yet another successful year?
Last years Vans Triple Crown was without a doubt an event to remember. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with an unforgettable swell, but the semi-final match up between Gabriel Medina (BRA) and Mick Fanning (AUS), who was simultaneously running for the world title at that time, earning the competition some hype.
Mick had taken The Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach weeks prior, so the crowd had half-expected Mick to effortlessly claim this victory. For the majority of the heat, Mick was leading with priority, then at the last second Gabriel put up a HUGE score on a SMALL wave. Medina threw a massive air and was awarded 6.5 (mind you, the conditions were subpar), ultimately taking the lead. The crowd, announcers, and surfers sat in silence for the next 2 minutes, waiting for a set to roll through for Mick to answer back.
After the longest 120 seconds of everyone’s lives, Gabriel ultimately took the win.
