SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Thursday, October 20, 2016) – Competition will resume today at the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal starting at 8:05 AM with Round 2. The world’s best surfers will battle to avoid early elimination in three-to-five foot surf at Supertubos.
“There’s some chunky walls out there, it’s the best we’ve seen so far,” Travis Logie, Deputy Commissioner said. “There’s still some fog so that’s a concern but we’re going to get going at 8:05 with some crazy heats to start off with so it’s exciting! Today looks like one of the best days in the waiting period so we’re going to try to do as much as we can and Round Three is on Standby.”
With the WSL Title on the line the opening two heats of Round 2 will witness John John Florence (HAW) and Gabriel Medina (BRA) fight to stay in the race as they take on wildcard Miguel Blanco (PRT) and Ryan Callinan (AUS) respectively.
Surfline, official forecast partner of the WSL, are calling for:
W swell filters in and offers lully/inconsistent sets but fun surf for Thursday before easing on Friday. Winds are generally most favorable in the mornings with light onshore winds developing in the afternoons on Thursday and Friday. Swell mix is expected for Supertubos on Saturday with deteriorating conditions. Solid surf for Sunday and Monday but side/onshore winds are an issue. Easing surf looks likely for Tuesday/Wednesday with improving winds and conditions for Supertubos. The more northerly facing breaks around Peniche will see solid surf over the weekend and into early next week but strong local winds will be an issue at times.
The Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal will run from October 18 – 29, 2016 and be LIVE via webcast on WorldSurfLeague.com and on the WSL mobile app.
