WSL PRESS RELEASE
Location: Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Event window: October 4 – 15, 2016
Today’s call: Lay Day
Conditions: Five-to-eight foot, strong onshore winds
SEIGNOSSE/HOSSEGOR/CAPBRETON, Landes, Nouvelle-Aquitaine / France (Wednesday, October 5, 2016) – A lay day has been called at the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro France, Stop No.9 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT).
Competition is OFF for the day with wind-affected 5 – 8 foot (1.5 – 2.5 metre) surf at the main venue of plage des Culs Nus in Hossegor.
“It looked like it had some potential and we were interested in watching it a little longer, but it’s still quite chunky with a lot of swell still pushing in and as the tide goes down the wind is going to come out onshore so we’re going to be OFF for the day again,” Kieren Perrow, WSL Commissioner, said. “Alain Riou, our surf director here, has been working for about six weeks with the local organizers to try to find the best location where we can setup the main site, and we have all these mobile backup options as well. Right now we have incredible banks in France and we just need the wind to cooperate and be offshore.”
Jordy Smith (ZAF), Jadson Andre (BRA) and Kai Otton (AUS) will be first out when the Quiksilver Pro France resumes with Round One Heat 3.
When competition starts at the Roxy Pro France, up first will be Johanne Defay (FRA), Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) and Keely Andrew (AUS) in the opening heat of Round One..
Event officials will reconvene at 8 a.m. local time Thursday morning to re-assess conditions and make the next call.
Surfline, official forecasters for the World Surf League (WSL), are calling for:
“An active North Atlantic has set up good size WNW swell. Pulses of WNW swell from our storm will continue into the back half of the week. Reinforcing WNW swell will fill in for the weekend.”
The Quiksilver and Roxy Pro France will be webcast LIVE on worldsurfleague.com and via the WSL app.
