SAN CLEMENTE, California/USA (Wednesday, September 7, 2016) – Opening day at Stop No. 7 of 10 on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, the 2016 Swatch Women’s Pro, has been called ON for a 10:00 a.m. start with Round 2 on standby and the Men’s Hurley Pro Trestles called off for the day. The world-renowned cobblestone break of Lower Trestles will play host to the world’s best as they compete in building two-to-four foot (0.5 – 1 metre) waves.
“We’re going to go as soon as we can with Women’s Round 1 and keep Round 2 on standby to just roll the dice and see if that swell decides to come in,” said WSL Deputy Commissioner Jessi Miley-Dyer. “It’ll be thirty-five minute heats to give the competitors a real chance at showing what they can do with this amazing wave. We’re all really excited to get this event started on opening day and cannot wait to see all the action to unfold.”
Current Jeep Rankings Leader Tyler Wright (AUS) will face compatriot Nikki Van Dijk (AUS) and event wildcard Bethany Hamilton (HAW) in Round 1 Heat 3.
Round 1 Heat 4 will witness Courtney Conlogue (USA) combat Laura Enever (AUS) and 2016 WSL Rookie Chelsea Tuach (BRB). Conlogue currently sits in second behind Wright on the Jeep Leaderboard and will fight to secure a solid finish in the opening round of competition.
Up first, Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) will take on the powerful styles of Malia Manuel (HAW) and Lakey Peterson (USA) in the opening heat of Round 1.
Surfline, the official forecaster for the WSL, are calling for:
Old SSW swell lingers as forerunners of a new SW/SSW swell creep in. Expect the surf to be a bit lully and inconsistent on sets early, with size coming up a notch through the day as new SW/SSW energy shows. Light/variable winds early, trending lightly onshore through the morning. Light Westerly flow through the afternoon. Partly to mostly cloudy skies.
The Hurley Pro and Swatch Women’s Pro will be webcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com as well as the WSL app.
