The rumors have been confirmed. As of today, surfing is an olympic sport! The 129th International Olympic Committee has approved 5 new sports to be featured in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; baseball/softball, karate, sports climbing, skateboarding, and surfing!
The process took over 2 years, but after today’s vote with unanimous approval, these new extreme sports will hit the 2020 Olympic scene. There are a handful of reasons why these sports were approved for the upcoming roster, one of the main reasons being the committee wanted to include the youth of today’s society. It is believed that these five sports (baseball/softball, karate, sports climbing, skateboarding, and surfing) are emerging and youth-focused events. Not only are these sports incredibly innovative and progressive, but these sports are also extremely popular in Japan (where the 2020 Olympics will be held). What a smart move! Involving today’s youth with their emerging sports, in one of the most traditional competitive game venues to date.
The inclusion of the new sports will not only allow young athletes to complete in world class events and fulfill their dreams as world class athletes, but it will also include 18 additional events, allowing over 450 new athletes a chance to compete! With all of that young talent out there,
Expect to see some shockingly talented prodigies in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics! Additional details will be confirmed and released summer of 2017.
