The morning started off fast and furious in Huntington Beach with the women’s third round of the Van’s US Open of Surfing. Winning this round gets you a spot in the quarter finals and the all important skip of elimination round four.
The first heat was an ultra- competitive match up of Lakey Peterson, Sally Fitzgibbons and Tatiana Weston-Webb. Lakey has shown no signs of rust from her long layoff as she put up the days highest score, winning the heat with a solid 16.27. Sally Fitzgibbons worked hard to keep up but was out slugged, while Tatiana Weston-Webb was only one big move away from changing the entire complexion of the heat.
In the second heat shots were fired early between world number one Courtney Conlogue, and Australian Laura Enever. Sage Erickson never found her grove as the wave selection was minimal, while Courtney and Laura found a couple of gems to make for a very close heat. The difference between first and second was a mere .22 as Courtney Conlogue gets the heat win with a score of 14.90 to Enever’s 14.66.
Another close heat occurred between world number two Tyler Wright, upstart Keely Andrew and Malia Manuel. The difference between first and third was only 2.6 points. Keely struck first scoring a 6.50 on her first wave. Wright and Manuel kept pace but it the end the difference would be each surfer’s last ride. Tyler only score a 6.10 but it was her second highest wave and helped her fight off Keely Andrew’s 6.30 and Malia Manuel’s 5.90. Most importantly it gets her a round off.
The final round was another great match up with the reigning world champion Carissa Moore, Her good friend Coco Ho and Australian superstar Steph Gilmore. Gilmore started strong and quickly placed pressure on her two adversaries. Coco Ho was consistent throughout the heat but would not find the wave to get her over the top, while Carissa Moore struggled to find her groove and will again face an elimination round. Steph Gilmore will advance straight to the quarter finals and enjoy a round off.
Round four will have intense match ups with the ladies fighting for a spot in the quarter finals. Heat one will feature Sally Fitzgibbons against Sage Erickson, Heat two has Laura Enever and Tatiana Weston-Webb, Carissa Moore will look to fight off Keely Andrew and the final heat of round four will have Hawaiians Malia Manuel and Coco Ho.
