Just as we speculated, Mick Fanning has done it! We watched Mick advanced from the quarterfinals into the semifinals, and were in awe as he earned a spot in the finals against John John Florence.
Mick was in a similar spot last year, surfing alongside Julian Wilson when an unexpected great white shark bit Mick’s leash and dragged him underwater. The attack was the first of it’s kind to be caught on film at a live sporting event. Fans and family members watched in terror as Mick battled for his life and found his way onto a rescue jet ski, which towed him to a boat nearby. Unfortunately, due to these horrific circumstances, the surfers did not conclude the final heat.
Fast forward to 2016, a year after the attack, and Mick Fanning finds himself in the finals at J-Bay yet again. He surfed impeccably, as white lightning always does, but the surf community was more inspired by his ability to conquer his fears, face the J-Bay Open, and snag the win!
What a comeback. We could not be more proud of you Mick!
