Next Stop of the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge is Hawaii Regional at
Ala Moana Bowls, South Shore, July 7/8
CARLSBAD, Calif., June 6, 2016 – In pumping surf at Newport Beach’s 56th Street, Huntington Surf and Sport (HSS) won the West Regional Qualifier of the Oakley Surf Shop Challenge on Friday afternoon. Fourteen teams from around the Orange County and Los Angeles areas showed up to compete for the title and a trip to the National Championships to compete for an all-expense-paid trip to Oahu, Hawaii’s North Shore for the 2016 SURFER Poll Awards.
Defending champions Val Surf faced off against a stacked field of competition. With 8s and 9s being earned, it led to an exciting final seeing Brett Simpson and Brad Ettinger dethrone Val Surf and secure the win for HSS. Huntington Surf and Sport’s last regional victory in 2003, sent them on to win the National Championship, with Brad Ettinger on the team.
With Brett Simpson joining CJ Hobgood from Team Quiet Flight on the list of former World Championship Tour surfers set to compete at Nationals, it’s building up to be one for the books! HSS is fired up to compete at Lower Trestles on October 6-7th, so expect to see them in the line up until then.

About Surf Shop Challenge
Originally conceived to provide a fun and competitive format for the hardcore surf shop riders, the SURFER Shop Team Challenge was one of the most popular and exciting Southern California contests of the early 1980s. Through the years the contest has evolved, with seven qualifying regional events around the country, culminating in a national championship in Bali, Indonesia for the first time in 2012. The underlying principles, however, have remained the same. The Oakley Surf Shop Challenge is still about giving back to the shops, the true backbone of the industry and the heart of the sport of surfing. Each year the competition level rises, the stakes become greater and the prizes become bigger.
