After 19 years on the World Tour, professional surfer Taj Burrow (AUS) has announced that 2016 will be his last season competing. The 37 year-old from Yallingup announced his resignation after the opening round at the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro in Australia. Taj won his first heat at Margies and recalled feeling the best he’s felt all year out in the water.
Taj has had a very successful surf career, going head to head with Kelly Slater on numerous occasions and has also been a contender for the world title. The surfer has put his blood, sweat, and tears into his training and has overall been recognized as a fan favorite.
There was no determining factor why Taj has given up his spot on tour, other than he believes it is time.
“I just didn’t have my heart in it and when I was losing I was getting just as upset as ever. It just wasn’t adding up, so I thought there’s not a better time to give my spot to someone more hungrier.”
To this day, we believe that Taj Burrow is one of the most incredible and innovative surfers to watch.
Although he will no longer be competing on the world tour, expect to see him doing big things! With a brand new baby, Taj’s new schedule and freedoms will be utilized to raising a beautiful family. We wish you the best Taj and congratulations on an epic 19-year career.
