Talk about timing!
11-time World Champ Kelly Slater witnessed a mother and son get swept away by a freak wave along a beachside path in Hawaii this Wednesday. The fact that Slater was even at this particular beach was out of the ordinary. As this is not a common spot he would normally visit.
According to the 7 News Perth report, professional photographer Chris White and his wife Sarah were hit by a freak wave while walking with their son down the beachfront path. “When the wave hit, there was like 10 ft whitewash in the air,” which swept his son and wife out to sea, Chris White explained.
Slater quickly assessed the situation, noted that the Lifeguards had it handled, but was compelled to jump in regardless. Avoiding the mortifying details of Sarah’s tug of war battle with the stroller and force of the wave, Slater retrieved Van and assisted Sarah out of the water. He even drove the family home! That’s what we call a modern day superhero.
