Many legendary big wave surfers, like Garrett McNamara, are storm chasers meaning they find themselves traveling around the world in search of pumping surf. Due to the current El Niño conditions on the western hemisphere, surf on the West Coast of the United States has been up. Mavericks, located in Santa Cruz, was seeing 30-40 foot waves.
On Wednesday afternoon, Garrett McNamara took off on a stormy giant at Mavericks, his feet came unglued on the drop and skipped repeatedly down the face of the wave. This major spill landed McNamara in the hospital with a break in his upper arm. Garrett McNamara is currently undergoing surgery in San Francisco to repair the damages the heavy waves caused. The big wave community and Surf Channel’s thoughts and prayers go out to the big wave surfer and his family. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
