The Surf Channel visited Ocean Conservancy in Washington D.C. to find out what’s really going on with pollution in our oceans. Nicholas Mallos, the Director of Trash Free Seas Program, explained to us why our ocean is at risk. The program specializes in the prevention of plastics and trash from entering the oceans and waterways. Over three decades, the program has protected our beaches and documented what has polluted our waters with the help of many volunteers. Over the course of those three decades, over 200 million pounds of trash has been collected. Unfortunately, due to the improper disposal of waste, over 650 million marine species have been negatively impacted.
