The O’Neill Coldwater Classic is an iconic competition held in Santa Cruz, California at Steamer Lane every fall. This year the competition was swept by none other than brazilian surfer, Rafael Teixeira. It was Rafael’s first time surfing the Classic and he sure made his mark. Advancing through his heats and ultimately taking the win in the four person final. Rafael Teixeira commented on his win at Steamer Lane saying “I don’t even know what was going on; I was just feeling really good this whole event. I love my backhand surfing, and this right has been so fun. When waves came, I wanted to give it my all and earn some good scores off my turns.” The O’Neill Coldwater Classic was Rafael’s first QS win, and with no major sponsors, his professional career is just beginning.
