Every athlete, past or present, knows what it’s like to compete and perform under pressure. They know the effort you put in equates to the results that are put out. Inside the inner-workings of each successful athlete, albeit amateur and pro, is a determined mindset and unwavering commitment. Oakley has delved into the minds and lives of professional athletes Gabriel Medina, Matt Kemp, and Eric Koston, among others, that have been featured in the series. The video shorts take a glimpse at the lives of several talented action sports stars, from all walks of life. These Oakley athletes proved that their one obsession was to push their talents and abilities to the limit to ultimately become the best in the world.
For example, Major League baseball player Matt Kemp’s raw talent reserved him a spot in the majors in 2006 at 22-years-old, but shortly after his rookie career began, the pressure and standards that Kemp was expected to perform at were not met. He spent the next few years of his career training and fighting to get to the top. Matt Kemp’s hard-work was finally recognized and rewarded with the Golden Glove Award and the Silver Slugger Award at the end of the season in 2009.
Additionally, professional surfer Gabriel Medina did not erupt on the scene as one of the world’s best surfers overnight. Medina had to earn his title and right to be on the world tour. He made his first appearance competing on the WSL (formerly known as the ASP) in 2011 and shocked many with his progressive and powerful style. After 3 years of training and dedication, Gabriel Medina became Brazil’s first world champ in 2014.
Oakley’s ‘One Obsession’ campaign really hits the nail on the head for those pursuing their passion. The new series is not just about the respective sport itself; it’s about those who put in the blood, sweat, and tears to do what they love, and then share their talent with the world.
