Epic conditions at the Hurley Pro at Trestles have produced some outstanding performances from the world’s best surfers. The Round 5 heat that had ‘the most talked about wave at Lowers’ included two very talented surfers, Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning, which was already a matchup for the ages. What resulted from Kelly Slater’s ride was one that blew away the crowd, but not the judges, who ultimately scored the wave a 4.17. Many are saying this is well under a mid range score he deserved for the other maneuvers he nailed. The score ultimately led to Fanning winning the heat, and moving forward.
Not only did Slater attempt a flyaway air reversal, but he landed it and continued to work the wave until the end. Slater’s progression and other’s on the tour have made fans look more closely at the judge’s scores, and what they believe is a 10 point ride. Was the 11 time champion worthy of a 4.17? You be the judge.
