Just this past Monday on Labor Day, renowned big wave charger Shawn Dollar broke his neck in four places and suffered a concussion in a surfing accident off the coast of Central California. The exact details of the accident are unknown, except that Shawn was in an unfavorable position during set waves of 25+ feet.
Luckily, Shawn is expected to make a full recovery and is not paralyzed from this frightening incident. Shawn reached out publicly on his Instagram account to make a statement about the accident, as follows:
“As news is getting out I wanted to let you know that I’m in stable condition and going to be okay. I expect a full recovery. I’m extremely lucky. I’m sorry to share the news this way to my family and friends but as I lay in my hospital bed I need rest and getting back to everyone isn’t possible. Every day is a gift. Tell the people around you how much you love them because it’s all that matters. I love you @jenn_jetaime Thank you to all my family and friends for all the support. I feel so loved…”
Shawn was able to get himself to the safety of fellow friends and surfers who then sought immediate care and emergency services. This is a very fortunate outcome for such a big wave charger, and everyone here at The Surf Channel wish a speedy recovery to Shawn.
