23-year-old Brazilian filmmaker Gabriel Novis fell in love with shooting when he was just a teenager. Today, he has traveled to over 9 different countries to film incredible athletes, travel shows, and short films.
With plenty of surf experience under his belt, get to know this rising filmmaker, and keep and eye out for the Venice Beach resident as he begins his career in feature films, fashion, music videos, advertising, and more.
When did you begin filming?
Gabriel Novis: When I was 13 years old, with a small digital still photography camera. My friends and I used to shoot ourselves skateboarding and trying to do a few stunts like the guys on the show ‘Jackass’. Sometimes we also tried to film horror short films but they were really bad! (haha)
How would you describe your work?
GN: That depends on my mood, and it changes a lot! Sometimes I like to go for dark things, and there are moments where I am kind of happy, and go for something more exciting, or even a ‘vibe’, but I am really influenced by a few big names of cinema like Wes Anderson and Tim Burton.
What athletes have you had the chance to work with?
GN: So many great surfers, but my favorite guy to shoot is Filipe Toledo because he goes huge and he lands 99% of the airs he throws.
What has been your favorite location to shoot?
GN: I love to film waves that break really close to the sand. Any beach break with heavy barrels or ramps that will explode on the shore looks fun to me. But there is this special place in Brazil called Fernando de Noronha where the water is as clear as as pool and the waves are super fun!
Where do you see your career in 10 years?
GN: I think it’s still too early to say, but I would love to keep traveling and shooting surfing and also work a lot (as a cinematographer) in a few narrative projects, feature films, and also music videos.
Do you have a favorite film/video?
GN: I really love Chris Malloy’s films, and really enjoy watching ‘Thicker Than Water’ because I think that the mood and the images of that film have so much to tell and, at the same time, keep some kind of mystery of the places they shot. But these days, I really enjoy watching what Kai Neville and Joe G have been doing.
Do you shoot anything other than surfing?
GN: Yes, I have been shooting more music videos and advertising projects other than surfing. I also really enjoy shooting fashion, and now I am starting to get into the cinema world, which is hard, but really fun.
Where is your favorite spot to surf?
GN: I don’t even remember the last time the waves were good and I got to surf instead of shoot, but I would say Salina Cruz in Mexico. The waves there are so fun and the lack of crowd and warm water is really tempting.
Where have you traveled as a filmmaker?
GN: I’ve shot in Morocco, Norway, Portugal, Panama, Chile, Peru, Mexico, USA, South Africa, and more. I have been to a lot of different places, but I’ve never been to Asia, which is my next dream destination.
