On Monday, January 19th, Brazilian surfer Ricardo Dos Santos was shot three times after an altercation in his hometown of Guarda do Embau.
Though details on exactly what happened to provoke the argument and later shooting aren’t clear, Dos Santos was immediately transferred to St. Joseph Hospital where he underwent multiple surgeries to repair a punctured lung and kidney.
Today, Ricardo Dos Santos was pronounced dead after losing so much blood during multiple surgeries. Many came forward as blood donors to help save the 24-year-old QS competitor, however he was unable to survive the intense trauma.
Ricardo Dos Santos was known for his barrel-riding expertise and receiving the coveted Andy Irons Forever Inspiration Award, following an excellent performance at the Billabong Pro Tahiti in 2012, where he defeated Taj Burrow, Jordy Smith, and 11x World Champion, Kelly Slater.
Dos Santos’ life and character have already been recognized through a flood of social media posts from athletes, brands, and media outlets, all deeply saddened by the loss of a good soul and fearless surfer.
