On Thursday December 11th, the Billabong Adventure Division, which consists of some of the world’s best big wave surfers, went to Nazare in Portugal to charge arguably the biggest swell ever surfed. Garret McNamara, Sebastian Steudner and Ross Clark-Jones were also in the lineup at Praia de Norte that day as well to make history.
Despite all the very talented veteran big wave surfers that charged this massive swell, it was Benjamin Sanchis towed by Eric Rebiere who rode, according to Billabong, ‘what most people call the biggest wave ever ridden in the history of surfing.’ Over the past few years, big wave surfers like Garret McNamara and Carlos Burle have pushed the limits at Nazare and have also been considered to have ridden the biggest waves on the planet.
Either way, from the Billabong footage of Benjamin Sanchis, there is no doubt this massive wave is XXL.
