During a free surf before competition at the 2014 Moche Rip Curl Pro in Portugal, long time ASP World Tour surf veteran and Champion (2001), CJ Hobgood, had his foot torn open and was forced to withdraw from competition entirely. It seems Hobgood has been having a run of unfortunate luck lately. Prior to the incident in Portugal, he face planted into a pile of giant rocks while free surfing (see video below). However, Hobgood has an admirable spirit and resiliency, and plans on returning to the water in time for the Billabong Pipe Masters.
On his injury in Portugal, all he had to say on Facebook was, “I never know what my story looks like but I do know His plans are always better than mine. [I was] free surfing before the event this morning and I will be unable to compete in my heat today. Looking forward to the pressure cooker that Pipe will bring for me and my future.”
Watch the video below to get a quick look at how CJ’s doing, post-foot-mangling:
Additionally, CJ and his brother Damien announced they will no longer be competing on the ASP World Tour after 2014. Though It may be that CJ’s heat in Round 1 of the Rip Curl Pro was the last one he surfs on the highest level of professional surfing, we hope to see him put on a show one last time at the Billabong Pipe Masters.

We wish CJ a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him compete at Pipeline.
