Santa Cruz, famous for its notorious surf spots and iconic pioneers such as Jack O’Neill, hosted its annual surf film festival September 24-26.
The Santa Cruz Surf Film Festival aims to bring together the surf community to celebrate both surfers and filmmakers, and to show the community their artistic vision of the sport. Due to the diverse subject matter within the world of surfing, all films submitted portray a different perspective on surf culture and the natural beauty that surrounds the sport.
The films chosen for awards were scored out of 10 by the judging panel and audience. The judging panel consisted of Darryl “Flea’ Virostko (3x Mavericks winner and Founder of FLEAHAB), Jon Free (President of Santa Cruz Waves), Judi Oyama (Skateboarding Industry Legend and Owner of Maximum Impact Design), Michel Junod (incredibly talented surfboard shaper), Stacy Forrester (Owner of Iconic Santa Cruz Surf Shop Sawyer Land & Sea Supply), Tyler Fox (Professional big wave surfer and CEO/Founder of Santa Cruz Waves), Neil Pearlberg (writer and co-host of Off the Lip Radio Show), Robert “Wingnut” Weaver (Legendary Longboarder and Star of The Endless Summer II), Hilary Bryant (Santa Cruz City Council Member & Former Mayor of Santa Cruz), and Ashley Lloyd Thompson (surfboard shaper & musician).
